Bednall International Registry

Since writing this article the author has received a publication “THE WORLD BOOK OF BEDNALLS” published by Burke’s Peerage[1]. This contains “The Bednall International Registry” derived (it is claimed) from a world wide search of electoral rolls, telephone directories, city directories and other public lists of names. It relates only to those persons identified whose names are spelt BEDNALL. The list of Bednall households appears to contain some double entries and there are errors in some of the first names.

“The Bednall International Registry” lists 209 Bednall households and estimates that there are in fact 293 Bednall households world wide. 77 percent of Bednall households are in Great Britain and a further 19 percent in Australia.. Other countries where Bednall households are listed are: the USA approx. 2 %; Canada less than 1% and South Africa approximately 1 %.

The detailed listing for Great Britain is given below. The highest concentrations of Bednall households appear to occur in Derbyshire -26%; West Midlands -11%; Nottinghamshire -10%; West Yorkshire -10% and Lancashire -8%. As regards the counties in which the names principally had their origin, table indicates that 2.4 percent of the total number of households listed below are in Staffordshire. The other counties, e.g. Northumberland, do not currently appear to have any Bednall households. The limitations of the information on which the table below is based mean that the above figures derived from it should be treated with caution. What is needed is an accurate map of the distribution of all Bednall/Badnall/Beadnell/Bidnall, etc. households.
