Since the 1st of July 1837 registers of all births, deaths and marriages registered in England and Wales have been deposited in the custody of the Registrar General. All are indexed in the General Indexes of Birth, Deaths and Marriages within 9 to 12 months following the date of registration. The quarterly indexes list the name of the person concerned, where registered and the volume and page of the General Register on which the event was entered. From 1860, the Deaths Index also gives the age at death and after 1910, the Births Index also lists the mother's maiden name. Note: Since this data was first drawn up a website FreeBMD has completed a listing of all births, marriages and deaths registered in England between 1837 and 1900 and its coverage of the period from 1900 to the present day is moving swiftly onwards.
Many similar records were also deposited with the Registrar
General, e.g. some non-parochial registers of baptisms or births, burials and
deaths, registers of births, baptisms, marriages, deaths and burials
of British subjects in foreign countries, etc. Further details can be found
on the Access
to Archives website.
The lists given below are principally for the Bednall Name and give fairly good coverage for the periods indicated. Further work is needed, however, to bring them up to date and to check those sections where other sources suggest births, etc. have either not been registered or have been missed when transcribing the indexes. Always remember that the names may have been misspelled on the certificates, for example when Sam Bednall died in Hanbury in 1882 his death was registered as that of Samuel Bedwell.
Beadnell/-nall names are not included in any of the lists. Badnall / Bidnalls etc are not included in the lists of births.
